In Memory

Jack A. "Occie" Evans

Jack A. Occie Evans

Occie died on June 29, 2015. This obituary from the Deseret News published on July 3, 2015 does not state a cause of death.

Jack Occie Evans
"Coach"
Words cannot adequately express our sorrow at the passing of our brother, uncle, and friend. Jack Occie Evans, 64, passed away June 29, 2015 at his home in Sandy, Utah. The world is darker without him in it. Jack Occie was born on January 23, 1951 to William Occie Evans and Dorothy Ashby Evans. On June 18, 1982, he was sealed to his "Jelly" Diane Sheppard Evans in the Salt Lake Temple, she preceded him in death. Occie played football for the University of Utah but his greatest accomplishment was that of being a teacher and coach. Occie began his teaching and coaching career at Brighton High School and finished after 36 years as a Bountiful Brave. He continued to coach up until the time of his death. Please wear something Red in Remembrance of Occie. GO BRAVES!
We will miss his kindness, infectious laugh, his friendship and his generous spirit. As his health and physical condition deteriorated near the end of his life, he refused to allow these additional limitations to stop him from participating in coaching. He loved to spend time with family and friends. Almost any occasion was a reason to gather with family and friends to celebrate. He will be desperately missed.
Jack is survived by his siblings William (Bonnie) Evans, Carl "Pink" (Barbara) Evans, and Sandra (Howard, deceased) Weed, as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 6, 2015 at 11:00 am in the River Oaks Stake Center, 8950 South 1300 West, West Jordan, Utah. There will be a visitation Monday morning from 9:45-10:45 am. An additional visitation will be held Sunday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway (10600 South), South Jordan, Utah. He will be laid to rest at the Elysian Burial Gardens.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Occie Evans Memorial Fund at any America First Credit Union. Donations are used to sustain The University of Utah award for the outstanding senior female athlete. Online condolences may be shared at www.jenkins-soffe.com.

Occie was my friend.  We met as sophomores on the football field.  We didn't know each other at all, but we got to know each other very well...the way that only a quarterback and a center get to know each other.  He protected me and I praised him.  He made me look better than I really was and I tried to bring out the best in him.  We were teammates all through RAMpage time on both football and baseball teams.  What great memories I have of Occie.

The last time I remember seeing Occie was the last day of American Legion baseball in the summer of 1969.  Occie went on to play football at the U and I went to play baseball at the Y.  It is with regret that I learn of his passing before our paths could cross again.  Occie, I know you are in a place where football never ends and where messages from the heart are felt.  So, from my heart to yours, I want yout to know you were admired by so many friends...many more than you ever realized.

Hike the ball on 2!

I met Occie before the Highland years (summers of '64 and '65) at my very 1st job, which was at Hogle Zoo (1st summer at .80 per hour and 2nd summer .90 per hour). Occie was kinda my supervisor and that is how I got to know him (young kids leading other young kids). He had experience working there. His dad, Bill, worked at the Zoo driving the train and his Mom, Dorthy worked at the front gate selling tickets. They had worked there for a number of years. Occie and I worked at the front gate taking tickets and cleaning and renting strollers. Occie kept an eye on how clean my strollers were. He also deceided when we would switch off tearing tickets. Since we worked for the concessions of the Zoo, we said that our job was "Feeding the People"!

Occie, Thanks for being such a good 1st supervisor. It was a positive experience working with you and your family.
